Based in the U.S., Monaghan crafts surreal and psychologically driven works that operate within the real, imagined and virtual worlds. He builds absurdist 3D environments that contain compelling objects, often pulling from populist sources, such as historic architecture, religious iconography, design, science fiction, and advertising.

In his recent work, the forms of wild animals appear as an expression of power and control. Mashing anatomy and design, these highly detailed compositions evoke alternate realities, if not fetishistic obsessions. Monaghan’s latest sculpture is based on the ancient motif of reclining bulls and oxen. It was crafted in computer modeling software and cast in aluminum. The figure appears both leather-like and vacuum-sealed, suggesting the surface of a BDSM enclosure or an upholstery. Ornamented with baroque 3D printed golden steel details, the bull embodies wealth, kingship and the material excess of luxury goods. The intricate horns of the bull use shapes that are taken from the iconic Beaux Arts style dome of the Edificio Metrópolis in Madrid.
