Yael Kanarek: SPIN_LOCK

Yael Kanarek
SPIN_LOCK, 2004
Sheer Organza Ribbon, Metal Hook, Aircraft Cable
Dimensions variable

Source code from a computer’s operating system is printed on over 800 yards of sheer pink organza ribbon. Overflowing gracefully like a bridal garment, SPIN_LOCK hangs from its apex suspended on a metal hook. The object brings to mind scenes described in Silicon Canyon. Springing forth from its central kernel, computer programming language physically floats in the air. Typically ephemeral data flitting across networks takes on physical form. This sculpture pays homage to the collaborative origins of open source platforms, which were developed globally via the internet by multiple authors.
